Protected and important biological areas

To protect the environment, nature and climate in Greenland, the Environmental Agency for Mineral Resource Activities (EAMRA) lays down conditions for certain activities in certain areas at certain times of the year. The starting point is the Field Rules, in which Chapters 2 and 3 list areas of major importance for animal and plant life. The provisions also state that the conditions will be reviewed continuously as biological knowledge expands and improves. For the latest advice notes, please read further here.

To compile and obtain an overview of the available knowledge, EAMRA uses the NatureMap digital map platform to assess the conditions to be applied in connection with raw material activities.

NatureMap is a publicly accessible online database of environmental and nature data on protected and biologically important areas in Greenland. The map shows areas where specific conditions and rules apply for carrying out raw materials activities.

The map contains information produced by the Greenland Institure of Natural Resources (GINR) and the Danish Centre for Environment and Energy (DCE).

By clicking on a marked area on the map, you can read why it is a biologically important area and what conditions and rules apply to activities in the area.
