Rules for fieldwork and reporting

The regulatory framework for all field activities until active mining describes, inter alia:

  • The activities which an undertaking may carry out under a licence.
  • What requires further approval from the Raw Materials Authority.
  • Which areas have been assessed as biologically important and where there are therefore restrictions on activity and traffic.
  • What reporting the company must submit to the authority.

‘Rules on field work and reporting in relation to raw materials (excluding hydrocarbons) in Greenland’ (the field rules) can be found here.

Application and authorisation for the use of drilling additives

The Environmental Agency for Mineral Resource Activities (EAMRA) has developed a process for how a mining company, as part of the field activity application process, is to apply for the use of drilling additives.

The possible sensitivity of the area in terms of freshwater lakes, elders or marine areas has an impact, as well as the amount and handling of the drilling additive in the field. Description of this and documentation of what is contained in the drilling additive, i.e. the substance’s Safety Data Sheet (SDS, formerly MSDS Material Safety Data Sheet), must be attached to the field activity application, which will be subject to an environmental assessment before conditions can be set.

Process for the assessment of drilling additives is available via this link.

The memorandum shows in Appendix 1 which substances have previously been the subject of an application for authorisation and which substances the mining companies have been able to submit to the SDS safety data sheet so that the environmental impact of the substance can be assessed. It is not an Authorisation List’ as such, as the content of substances may change over time, but a list showing which substances have previously been acceptable based on the submitted application material and safety data sheet.
