Environmental monitoring -  company and authority

As an essential part of the permitting process leading up to the construction and operation of a mine, the establishment of an environmental monitoring programme is also known as an environmental monitoring plan.

The programme is a detailed overview of how all relevant environmental aspects of projects are to be monitored. The programme covers, for example, all the project’s emissions into the environment, transport and use of fuel and chemicals, and disruption to animal and plant life.

In addition to defining what, when and how to monitor, the programme also includes a distinction between what the mining company itself must monitor on an ongoing basis and what the authorities monitor as part of the control of the company. The programme is regularly reviewed and adapted in cooperation between the raw materials company and the Environmental Agency for Mineral Resource Activities (EAMRA) as the project develops. The mining company shall bear all costs of the monitoring.

Reports from environmental monitoring by authorities are available here.
